Anise Seed

Anise has a distinct licorice flavor and a light sweetness that works well in a variety of foods. It is also known to have some medicinal qualities.

Use whole or ground in many sweet or savory dishes including sauces, soups, breads, biscuits and cakes.  Also use in drinks such as pernod or hot tea.  Heighten the flavor of the seeds by dry-frying.  While anise is stronger than fennel, it can be used as a substitute if you reduce the amount.
